Contemplative Reading

Pre-reading: Mind and Brain Preparation
These suggestions are designed to help you prepare mental schema for text and to begin interacting with the text, with the author of anything you are reading! When using these reading preparation strategies you are choosing to bring your consciousness into active play as you read. It is not necessary to to spend a lot of time with these suggestions to have them be useful.

  • Previewing: Jacket, Front and End Pages
  • Study the Table of Contents
  • Vocabulary
  • Text Overview
  • Front and End Matter
  • Actually Reading Text

    Dharma Contemplation*
    Use short passages, reading them frequently during the day. Listen to recordings of the passages if possible. Carry copy of segment around during the day to refer to during wait times (such as stoplights, standing in line, download time, waiting for washing machine)
  • Part 1 - Days 1-3: Listening and Reading
  • Part 2 - Days 4-7: Exploring Meaning
  • Part 3 - Days 8-10: Exploration of Body, Feeling Tone, Mind States
  • Part 4 - Days 11-12: Relationship to Personal Life
